Interconnected-ness of Needs and Boundaries
Setting and maintaining boundaries can be a tricky business. We have all been there questioning whether it's okay to say no or assert ourselves. The fear of rejection or not being liked can weigh heavily especially when dealing with authority figures. It's a familiar struggle and it often stems from the experiences we had over the years.
A client recently completed a Needs Assessment. This assessment is a tool for identifying our core needs, the things that drive our behaviors and ultimately our satisfaction in life. For this client, safety emerged as a core need. As we delved into the concept of safety, we uncovered how it was preventing them from establishing strong boundaries in their relationships both professional and personal.
Certain behaviors from others triggered this safety need causing them to slip into a people-pleasing mode to ensure they felt safe. We discussed various strategies and techniques to satisfy this need for safety while also creating healthy boundaries that would enable them to move forward in a more balanced and fulfilling way. It will take practice, patience and a little grace to develop this muscle. In the long run, it can lead to a more productive and rewarding life
Understanding our needs and how they influence our lives is a powerful tool. It gives us invaluable insights into our behaviors and choices. When we bring this knowledge to the surface, it can transform how we perceive our options and react to our opportunities. Exploring your needs and boundaries can be a path to living a more authentic and fulfilling life.
