Do You Know Your Triggers?

How aware are you of your triggers and their impact on your actions? Recently, I had a conversation with a client who wasn’t aware that he had been triggered. He had been promoted at work. His leadership team had full confidence in his abilities and was investing in his growth. But, there were some people in the organization who had their own biases about the promotion and started spreading judgments that had nothing to do with his talent or qualifications for the role. Instead, these were based on superficial characteristics they saw as weaknesses.

One specific comment that was made got under his skin. When he shared his situation with me, I noticed that he kept using a certain word repeatedly when describing what was happening. So, I asked him if he was open to an observation and I pointed out the repetitive use of that word. He fell silent for a moment, clearly taken aback. He hadn't even realized he was using it so frequently. That one word had triggered him so deeply that he didn’t realize it was driving his response.

Once he recognized how that word was controlling his reaction to the situation his energy shifted. It was an epiphany for him. He hadn't realized how much he was reacting to this perceived slight, letting the person who made that comment live rent-free in his head and color his actions. One word had unconsciously held so much power over him.

Our visceral response to a threat can be incredibly potent if we're not mindful enough to catch it before it takes hold. That's where having someone like a coach, a best friend, or a mentor can make all the difference. They can provide an objective view, shining a spotlight on the things we may not be seeing and how they influence our reactions.

As in this case, it can be as simple as an observation about the use of a specific word that opens up new possibilities and prevents our triggers from getting in the way. It's amazing how a shift in perspective can lead to significant changes in how we approach challenges.
